This page started with Devin's book lists, and others have added to it since then. Devin was also a tremendous help in getting this list organized and put on-line. Thanks. I, Paula, have not reviewed most of these books, but Devin had good taste. This list should help you find literature to supplement your history studies. If you would like to add books to this list, please e-mail your list to me and include the author's name and the time period. If you know of an on-line list of literature by time period which is not in my Additional Resources, please alert me to that as well.

You may have noticed that if a title begins with "The" or "A," I have omitted that article to simplify sorting. I have also omitted commas for similar reasons.

Have your children read the Newbery Award books yet? (Have you?) Though not a chronological list (many are not even historic), these include much of the greatest children's literature of our time. For a complete list, including Out of Print books, check the ALA Newbery Award page.

My favorite general-purpose children's book list out there is The 1,000 Good Books List. There are several valuable book lists linked on The Parker Family site.

For historical fiction and fact for beginner readers, check your library for books in the I Can Read History series. Most are about US History.
